Citizens have rights as stakeholders in the governance system and we need to ensure that they get them in a definite and accurate manner. Activities contrary to it must be prevented and responsible civil liberties must be enforced.
In short, citizens have a duty to fulfill certain duties and responsibilities towards the society and the nation. It is the duty of a good citizen to automatically comply with them.
Article 51A of the Constitution of India (1976)
  • To show respect and obedience to the Constitution and basic values of the nation, not to disrespect and violate them, and to nurture the values of the national freedom struggle.

  • Protect, preserve and not destroy public property.

  • Maintain historical and cultural assets.

  • Protect and preserve natural resources, forest and wildlife and ecological balance.

  • To protect and uplift the status and dignity of women and to resist anti-women measures.

  • Resist superstitions and superstitions, develop scientific taste, scientific temper and humanism, and rise to personal and societal innocence.

  • Uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the nation, promote religious community harmony and mutual brotherhood and be ready to serve the nation in times of need.

The Panchayat Raj Act (1994, 1999)
The Panchayati Raj Act, 1994 defines the duties and responsibilities of the citizens residing in the area of a Gram Panchayat. As a citizen of a Panchayat, every person residing in the Gram Panchayat area is liable to perform the following duties.
  • Participate in the Gram Sabha, play a direct role in the local government process, thereby making constructive democracy meaningful.

  • To prevent tax evasion and to ensure the unique revenue of the local body by paying tax rates accurately. Avoid manipulation or evasion in paying taxes.

  • Assist the Panchayat in the development work. Assist in the mobilization and labor of personal, physical and financial resources.

  • Involve yourself in planning and execution assessments.

  • - Avoid nuisance, disturbance of public life, dumping of garbage in public places etc. and be vigilant against them.

  • Co-operate with the Panchayat in the implementation of activities such as sanitation, disease prevention, nutrition distribution, literacy, legal education and dispute resolution process.

  • Help make the social audit process worthwhile.

  • Against fundamentalism and sectarianism, engage in activities that help in the process of social cohesion and participatory development.

  • Be vigilant as per law against corruption and misgovernance. Ensure the possibility of a democratic process of local government.

  • Cooperate in the maintenance of natural resources, public transport system, etc., and avoid misuse and exploitation.

  • Promote and practice frugality, avoid luxury and extravagance, and ensure self-help activities and participation.

  • Rally against social evils such as alcoholism, drugs, dowry, violence against women, child labour, action against backward classes, etc.

  • Participate in environmental awareness and ensure ecological balance.

  • Collaborate in accurate collection, compilation and codification of statistics. Don't give out incorrect information and resist giving it.

  • Help protect the victims of natural disasters.

  • Develop co-operative and saving habits.

  • Giving up land for development purposes and not encroaching on public land.

  • Organize neighborhood groups, self-help and mutual aid groups.

  • Avoid anti-social behaviour such as spitting, defecating, drinking and smoking in public places and on the streets.

  • Do not slaughter animals in public. Do not sell meat and meat debris in the open and in a disgusting manner.

  • Get accurate and necessary vaccinations for pets, pets, and birds and get them licensed.

  • Comply with the rules and regulations, do not violate, and do not incite or assist in the violation.

  • Maintain gender equality and justice. Participate in activities accordingly.
